Smelly water

Could mean:

  • Poor water quality - use Vivo Test
  • Filter needs a service - replace filter pad
  • Too much food
  • Needs new water

Poor water quality:
Smelly water is a sign of water gone bad - and that's bad news for your fish. So if your Vivo starts to smell funny, run a Vivo Test straight away to check the quality of the water.

Vivo Filter PadsReplace filter pad:
Changing the filter pad in your Vivo should take away some of the smell. The pad contains a special substance that removes bad smells and clears dirty-looking water.

Too much food:
Feeding your fish is fun but don't go wild! Your Digi-Care Guide will tell you when it's dinner time for your fish - and you musn't give them snacks between meals! Too much food causes too much waste and clogs the filter. Smelly water could be a sign that the filter is struggling to keep up with this excess food and waste. Do a Vivo Test to check the water hasn't gone bad.

Needs new water:
If it's still cloudy carry out a Vivo 4-week clean and then continue changing water ( remove to clean level) every two days until the water clears. Don't forget to add the right dose of Vivo Safe to protect your fish from the nasty chemicals found in tap water.
